WHAT IS FLOAT THERAPY?

WHAT IS FLOAT THERAPY?

Endless notifications, Costco lighting, and doom‑scrolling in bed have become the new normal.

But your nervous system evolved in nature over millennia. It was built for darkness, quiet, and long stretches of nothing in particular.

Floating is our way of giving you that nothing back.

What is Floating, Really?

Float therapy (aka sensory deprivation, REST, the isolation tank) is simple:

You lie back in about 12 inches of skin‑temperature water, saturated with Epsom salt so dense you float like a cork. The room is quiet and dark. No phone. No to‑do list. No one needing anything from you.

Gravity lets go. Your muscles stop bracing. Your brain stops tracking the thousand micro‑stimuli of ordinary life. For 60–90 minutes, you get a rare experience: almost nothing coming in.

The technical term is Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST).

A Little Science (and a Lot of Relief)

When you float, a few big things happen under the surface:

Sensory load drops
Your brain is usually on high alert, tracking sound, light, posture, temperature, and social cues. In the tank, most of that disappears. Your nervous system finally gets to stand down.

Your body shifts into “repair mode”
Floating reliably activates the parasympathetic (rest‑and‑digest) branch of your nervous system. Heart rate and breathing slow, blood pressure and stress hormones drop, brain waves drift toward theta and delta. Translation: your biology gets a rare window to heal.

Pain and tension soften
Without gravity compressing your joints and spine, tight muscles start to unwind. Research and a mountain of anecdotes point to relief for chronic pain, migraines, and post‑workout soreness.

Your mind gets quieter (or louder before it gets quieter)
With the outer noise gone, the inner noise shows up. Old thoughts, emotions, memories. It can be beautiful, boring, or uncomfortable. But it’s honest. And it’s fertile ground for insight. Then the healing starts and the noise begins to subside.

Floating is not a magic trick. It’s just you, minus almost everything that usually overwhelms you. That subtraction is where a lot of the medicine lives.

Why People Actually Float

People don’t book floats because they love neuroscience. They book because:

  • They’re burned out and can’t remember the last time they felt truly rested
  • Their body hurts and nothing else has really touched that pain
  • Meditation feels impossible with constant pings and kids and Slack
  • They want a safe place to meet whatever’s under the surface

In the tank, you can:

  • Heal: Give your body a gravity‑free window to decompress and repair.
  • Discover: Watch what your mind does when it can’t distract itself. Ideas, memories, buried emotions, and strange dreams all come to visit.
  • Transform: Over time, floating becomes a practice. You learn you can be with yourself in the dark and not fall apart. That confidence leaks into the rest of your life.

What to Expect at True North Float

Arrival
You show up a little early. We give a quick orientation, answer questions, and help you decide on 60, 75, or 90 minutes.

Launch
You step into your private float suite, shower off, and slide into the tank. Lights, music, and guided breathwork are optional; you can ease in or go full void (silent darkness).

Journey
Time gets weird. Thoughts come and go. Your body remembers what “off duty” feels like. You might nap, you might process, you might meet an old version of yourself you haven’t seen in a while. You might get gobsmacked by profound downloads from soul. Watch it all come and go. No expectations. The practice is about releasing that iron grip on life and going with the flow.

Re‑entry
Gentle music or lights bring you back. You shower, get dressed, and step out feeling less jagged at the edges.

Floating won’t fix your whole life in one session. But it will give you a reliable place to turn down the volume, listen in, and let your system remember what it’s like to be regulated and whole again.

When your eyes are tired, the tank is waiting.
